Manchester United clinched a record 19th English league title when they came from behind to draw 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Wayne Rooney's second-half penalty secured the point they needed to move seven points ahead of Chelsea, who have just two games remaining.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have now won 19 titles, one more than the record they had shared with Liverpool. It is also the 12th league title for Ferguson, who has been in charge at United since 1986.
"It was a fantastic performance by the lads and the supporters and for everybody connected with the club it's a great day today," Ferguson said.
"It wasn't an easy game, we went 1-0 down having given them a bad goal but we kept on and we don't give in. It looked like it was not going to be our day - we've always had it difficult here.
"It is a local derby and they are fighting for their lives, looking for that point, but we kept going and that's a good quality."
United won the title thanks to their outstanding home form - they are still unbeaten at Old Trafford in the league this season - but won just five games away.
"The focus will be on our away form, which we are disappointed in, but our home form is fantastic," Ferguson said.
Commenting on criticism that this United team is not a particularly good one, veteran Ryan Giggs turned to sarcasm. "Obviously we're rubbish - we've won the Premier League and we're in the Champions League final.
"Twenty years ago we were nowhere near Liverpool, but we've gone past our biggest rivals. This is why I keep going, for days like this, it's amazing."
Brett Emerton's 20th-minute goal had looked like being enough to give Blackburn victory against a United side lacking their usual spark.
But after Martin Olsson headed a great chance to extend the home side's lead, United won a penalty when Javier Hernandez fell under a challenge from Paul Robinson.
With 17 minutes to go, Rooney stepped up to send the ball into the corner and United hung on to claim the point they needed.
"It was terrifying," Rooney said. "I had to compose myself before taking the penalty because there was quite a long delay.
The point could also yet prove crucial for Blackburn, who are level on 40 points with Wolverhampton Wanderers and one better than third-bottom Blackpool after both teams claimed vital wins in their fight for survival.
Wolves won 3-1 at Sunderland while Charlie Adam scored the winner for Blackpool as they edged out Bolton 4-3 in a thriller.
Kevin Davies put Bolton ahead early on but DJ Campbell quickly equalized and then Jason Puncheon put Blackpool ahead with a curling effort from about 20 yards.
Matt Taylor levelled for Bolton but Campbell scored his second of the game to restore Blackpool's lead at half-time.
Daniel Sturridge thought he had stolen a point for Bolton when he headed in a second equalizer but Adam finished off a slick counter-attack to grab three vital points.
The results leave Wolves one point and two places above the relegation zone but Blackpool, who play at Manchester United on the final day, are one point behind them and still stuck in the bottom three.
West Bromwich Albion beat 10-man Everton 1-0 in the day's other match to move into the top half of the table, with Youssouf Mulumbu scoring the only goal of the game.
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was sent off for a late challenge on James Morrison.
